What to see Ponte

3 sights

Ponte Sant'Angelo

Ponte Sant'Angelo

Hadrian built this bridge in 134 AD to carry visitors across the Tiber to his mausoleum; for centuries it was the principal route for pilgrims walking to St Peter's, and in the Holy Year of 1450 the crowds were so dense that the parapets gave way and scores drowned — a disaster that haunted the city's memory.

Palazzo Altemps

Palazzo Altemps

A refined late-Renaissance palace just off Piazza Navona, Palazzo Altemps is now one of the four homes of the Museo Nazionale Romano — and arguably the most pleasurable, because its great antique sculptures are displayed in the very rooms a cardinal's family once lived in, around a graceful arcaded courtyard.

Via dei Coronari

Via dei Coronari

A perfectly straight Renaissance street cut through the medieval tangle, Via dei Coronari follows the line of the ancient Roman Via Recta. Its name comes from the "coronari", the sellers of rosaries and holy trinkets who once clustered along it to catch the pilgrims streaming toward St Peter's, especially in Holy Years.
