What to see Trevi

3 sights

Fontana di Trevi

Fontana di Trevi

The largest and most theatrical fountain in Rome, the Trevi (completed 1762 to Nicola Salvi's design) is built against the entire flank of a palace, so that the sea-god Oceanus seems to ride his shell-chariot straight out of the building, pulled by tritons and wild sea-horses — one calm, one rearing — over a cascade of artificial rock.

Palazzo Barberini

Palazzo Barberini

When Maffeo Barberini became Pope Urban VIII in 1623, his family set out to build a palace worthy of a dynasty — and hired the three greatest architects of the age. Carlo Maderno designed it, the young Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini both worked on it, and the two future rivals each left a staircase: Bernini's grand square one, Borromini's ingenious oval helix.

Palazzo del Quirinale

Palazzo del Quirinale

Standing on the highest of Rome's seven hills — chosen for its cooler, healthier air — the Quirinale was begun in 1583 as a papal summer residence. It went on to house thirty popes, then the kings of a united Italy after 1870, and since 1947 it has been the official residence of the President of the Italian Republic, making it one of the largest seats of a head of state in the world.
