What to see Pigna

Pantheon

Pantheon

The best-preserved building of the ancient world, the Pantheon was rebuilt by the emperor Hadrian around 118–128 AD on the site of an earlier temple by Agrippa — whose name Hadrian modestly kept on the inscription across the front. "Pantheon" means "to all the gods", and the building is a temple to the cosmos itself.

Santa Maria sopra Minerva

Santa Maria sopra Minerva

The only true Gothic church in Rome, built from the 1280s by the Dominican friars on the site of an ancient temple linked to Minerva — hence "over Minerva". Step in from the bright piazza and the ceiling stops you: a vault of deep cobalt blue scattered with golden stars, a fragment of medieval heaven rare in this Baroque city.

Chiesa del Gesù

Chiesa del Gesù

The mother church of the Jesuit order, consecrated in 1584, the Gesù is the template from which countless Baroque churches across the world were copied — a single broad nave with no aisles to distract the eye, driving the worshipper's attention straight to the altar and the pulpit, the perfect machine for the dramatic preaching of the Counter-Reformation.
