What to see Villa Pamphili

Casino del Bel Respiro

Casino del Bel Respiro

The "Casino of the Beautiful Breath" — named for its airy, healthy hilltop position — is the elegant heart of Villa Doria Pamphili, Rome's largest park. Built in the 1640s by the sculptor-architect Alessandro Algardi for Prince Camillo Pamphili, nephew of Pope Innocent X, it was conceived not as a home but as a garden pavilion to display the family's collection of antique sculpture.

Italian Garden

Italian Garden

Spreading east of the Casino del Bel Respiro, the formal Italian garden of Villa Pamphili is laid out in the grand 17th-century manner: geometric parterres of clipped box, a long central axis of fountains, terraces and avenues of umbrella pines drawing the eye toward distant views.

Park Meadows

Park Meadows

Beyond the formal gardens, Villa Pamphili opens into wide rolling meadows and pine-shaded lawns — the part of the park Romans love best. Spread across 184 hectares of the Janiculum hillside, it is the city's great democratic playground.
