What to see Garbatella

3 sights

Garbatella Lotti

Garbatella Lotti

Founded in 1920, Garbatella was conceived as an English-inspired "garden city" for Rome's working families — low houses with gardens, communal courtyards and greenery instead of grand boulevards. The neighbourhood is organised into numbered "lotti" (lots), each a cluster of homes built around a shared inner court, with external staircases, loggias and pergolas that give the district its warm, village intimacy.

Albergo Rosso

Albergo Rosso

The "Red Hotel" is the architectural showpiece of Garbatella — a striking communal residence designed by Innocenzo Sabbatini and completed in 1927 as part of a series of "alberghi suburbani", subsidised hotels built to house workers and families displaced from the centre while they waited for permanent homes.

Teatro Palladium

Teatro Palladium

Opened in 1927 as the "Teatro Garbatella", the Palladium was the grand cinema-theatre at the heart of the new garden-city, designed by Innocenzo Sabbatini with a monumental façade overlooking Piazza Bartolomeo Romano. For decades it served as the neighbourhood's cinema and variety stage.
