What to see Sant'Eustachio

Pantheon

Pantheon

The best-preserved building of the ancient world, the Pantheon was rebuilt by the emperor Hadrian around 118–128 AD on the site of an earlier temple by Agrippa — whose name Hadrian modestly kept on the inscription across the front. "Pantheon" means "to all the gods", and the building is a temple to the cosmos itself.

Palazzo Madama

Palazzo Madama

Since 1871 this palace has been the seat of the Italian Senate, but its history runs deep into the Renaissance. Built in the early 16th century for the Medici family — on the foundations of the ancient Baths of Nero — it takes its name from "Madama" Margaret of Austria, the illegitimate daughter of the Emperor Charles V, who lived here after marrying into the Medici and then the Farnese.

Sant'Eustachio church

Sant'Eustachio church

A church has stood here since at least the 8th century, dedicated to St Eustace — a Roman general who, legend says, was converted while hunting when he saw a glowing crucifix shining between the antlers of a stag. That stag's head with a cross still crowns the church and gives the whole rione its emblem; you can spot it on the bell-tower and around the neighbourhood.
