Domus Aurea
After the great fire of 64 AD cleared the centre of Rome, the emperor Nero seized a vast tract of the smouldering city to build himself a pleasure palace of legendary extravagance: the "Golden House". It sprawled across some 80 hectares — landscaped grounds, woods, vineyards and an artificial lake where the Colosseum now stands — with banqueting rooms sheathed in gold and a famous revolving dining hall open to the sky.
