Castel Gandolfo & the Papal Palace

Castel Gandolfo & the Papal Palace

Perched above the deep blue Lake Albano, the elegant little town of Castel Gandolfo is famous as the popes' summer residence. The Apostolic Palace, built in the 17th century over the ruins of the emperor Domitian's villa, was for centuries the papal retreat from the Roman heat.

Lago Albano

Lago Albano

A near-circular volcanic crater lake of extraordinary depth and clarity, ringed by wooded slopes, Lake Albano sits directly below Castel Gandolfo. Filling an extinct volcanic vent, it is one of the deepest lakes in central Italy, its still water mirroring the green hills and the papal town on the rim above.

Ariccia

Ariccia

Reached by Bernini's grand viaduct bridge and centred on a piazza he and his circle designed — with the domed church of Santa Maria dell'Assunzione and the noble Palazzo Chigi — Ariccia is a Baroque jewel, a rare town laid out as a single unified composition by the master of Roman Baroque.

Nemi

Nemi

The smallest and prettiest of the Castelli, the medieval village of Nemi clings to a ridge above its own tiny crater lake — the 'mirror of Diana', sacred in antiquity to the goddess, whose grove and temple once stood on its shore. The village is a perfect huddle of flower-hung lanes, a brooding Orsini-Ruspoli castle and balconies that hang over the green bowl of the lake.

Frascati

Frascati

The most famous of the Castelli and the closest to Rome, Frascati is synonymous with its crisp white wine, poured straight from the barrel in the old 'cantine' of the centre, traditionally with a paper bag of porchetta or a slab of pizza bianca brought in from outside.
