What to see Lago di Bracciano

4 sights

Castello Orsini-Odescalchi

Castello Orsini-Odescalchi

Raised by the powerful Orsini family in the 15th century and later owned by the Odescalchi, this is one of the best-preserved and most beautiful baronial castles in Italy — a textbook fortress of round towers and battlements that has never been taken by force in its entire history.

Lago di Bracciano

Lago di Bracciano

Filling a huge volcanic crater, Lake Bracciano is so clean it serves as a strategic drinking-water reserve for Rome, which means motorboats are banned — leaving the water to swimmers, sailing boats and windsurfers in unusual peace.

Trevignano Romano

Trevignano Romano

On the northern shore, Trevignano is the prettiest of the lake towns: a single graceful lakefront promenade lined with fish restaurants, watched over by the ruins of another Orsini castle on the hill above.

Anguillara Sabazia

Anguillara Sabazia

Built on a little promontory jutting into the lake, the medieval centre of Anguillara is a tangle of stepped lanes climbing to a terrace with sweeping water views. Its name comes from the eels ('anguille') once fished here, and its silhouette — houses rising straight from the water — is one of the lake's iconic sights.

Local tips & flavours

  • Castle then swim
  • Lake fish at Trevignano
  • No motorboats, great swimming
  • Train for the town, car for the lake
