Galleria Borghese

Galleria Borghese

Cardinal Scipione Borghese — nephew of Pope Paul V and the most voracious art collector of his age — built this "casino" in the early 1600s to display his treasures and entertain. The collection he assembled, sometimes by fair means and sometimes by confiscation, remains one of the densest concentrations of genius anywhere.

Tempio di Esculapio

Tempio di Esculapio

This graceful little Ionic temple was built in the 1780s as a romantic "folly" — a purely decorative classical pavilion — on an island in the artificial lake of the Villa Borghese gardens. Dedicated in name to Aesculapius, the ancient god of healing and medicine, it was designed to be reflected picturesquely in the water.

Pincio Terrace

Pincio Terrace

Laid out by the architect Giuseppe Valadier in the early 19th century, the Pincio terrace is Rome's great public balcony, perched above Piazza del Popolo and looking west across the rooftops to the dome of St Peter's. The promenade is lined with marble busts of illustrious Italians — poets, patriots, scientists — installed in the 1800s as a kind of open-air pantheon of national heroes.
